On a trip last year to San Francisco for my husband’s real estate group, we went to Pier 1. The sun was setting and we (meaning all the real estate people) were waiting to walk to the restaurant not too far away.
Now mind you, I am not accustomed to wearing high-heeled shoes. I thought my outfit looked just smashing, but my feet were already done. I knew I was going to have to walk and I was not looking forward to it. I was staring over the edge of the railing looking at the water ( and waiting for the impending walk), I saw this seagull swimming but really coasting in the bay. He was relaxed and calm. It looked as though he had eaten his dinner already. He looked at me and then turned around to face the sun. He appeared to be enjoying the last rays of warm September day.I thought his feet don’t hurt and I bet he is not hungry waiting for a meal.
I snapped the photo with my phone, with the intention of trying to capture the essence of this seagull which had obviously little cares in the world for the moment
and wanted to enjoy the setting sun. My hope is that this piece not only captures that but that we all can relate at the end of the day, that no matter what, we can look back on the day and be at peace.
This piece was created using a mix of batik and 100% cotton fabrics. The body of the seagull free motion embroidery using 50 wt. 100% Cotton thread made by Aurafil. No paint or other embellishments were used. The finished piece comes with a wooden dowel to hang with out any of the hanging apparatus to show.
